Formed as an elegant bent softwood container with decorative seam at the front, with high overarching handle, the handle affixed to either side with a decorative touch of overlapping flat reed wrapping, covered in lacquer turned deep brown from age, with a red lacquer inscription to the reverse with kao by Ryokyu Sosa (Buddhist name Zuiryusai) (1650-1691), fifth generation iemoto of the Omotesenke school of tea who succeeded the fourth generation in 1673.  26.5cm high, 19.5cm diameter.  Together with a Japanese wooden box and modern bamboo cylinder insert for holding water.
