Ming Dynasty, Tianqi period (1620-1627)

Decorated in underglaze blue and copper red with a dynamic and rare design of a magpie perched on a branch in a blossoming plum tree surrounded by stylised clouds, its partner flying in to meet it, both birds depicted with great humour and character.  3.8cm high, 21.2cm diameter.  Together with an early Edo period brown lacquered wooden box, likely its original box, with an old inscribed paper collector's label affixed to one side.  Condition:  fritting to the rim, three small areas of polishing where kiln material stuck during the firing.
