Hagi, Japan
Edo period (1603-1868), beginning of the 17th century
Potted with a gently everted rim and a flared foot in low-fired stoneware, covered in a beautiful soft pale glaze which has acquired mottled faun and warm brown hues from hundreds of years of use, the shomen (front) with a wavy streak to the glaze suggesting distant hills or a bubbling stream, the interior with some accidental kiln inclusions and pitting, only adding to the already rich keshiki (landscape or scenery) of the tea bowl. 8cm high, 13.8cm diameter. Together with a purple silk shifuku and an early wooden box with remnant old inscribed paper label to one side, and an inscribed collector's paper tag affixed to the silk wrapping cord.
