Kakiemon family kiln (Nangawara Valley), Japan
Edo Period (1603-1868), c. 1670-1690
Potted in fine porcelain with a moulded-decagonal rim, decorated in underglaze blue with cherry blossoms floating amongst waves to the cavetto, and an inner circular border of scrolling foliage, showing a good variation of cobalt shading, and a high quality of cobalt with a fine colour, the rim with an iron brown enamel dressing (fuchi-beni). Stylised fuku mark in seal script within a double-square to the base, and four evenly spaced fine stilt marks around the mark. 3cm high, 18.5cm diameter. Condition: three small flakes to the iron brown enamel at the rim. Reference: see Shibata Collection vol. 5 page 70, item 82, for a Kakiemon dish of similar moulded shape and with the same mark.
