Earthenware with rounded vertical walls and a wavy rim covered in a mottled red glaze with black and white markings, impressed seal next to the foot. 9cm high and 13cm diameter. Together with a sealed cotton cloth and tomobako. The interior of the lid inscribed by Horiuchi Soshin (1919-2015), Horiuchi Sokan Kenchusai XII of the Horiuchi branch of the Omotesenke school of tea.  Within the inscription he named the chawan ‘Shoto’, a name derived from Zen Buddhism referring to the sound of wind passing through pine needles creating a wave-like murmur as if the tree were the ocean, implying the silence and oneness of the mind.  Cat. 750
