28. Hexagonal kashibachi with rope-twist handles
Jingdezhen, China
Ming Dynasty, Tianqi Period (1620-1627)
Thickly made in hexagonal section with vertical side walls, a rope-twist handle at either side, decorated with three deer below mountains and the moon, the base unglazed. 5.5cm high (including handles), 20.9cm diameter. Together with early inscribed wooden box. Cat. 691
For hexagonal kashibachi of different decoration but similar form, see Kosometsuke: Monochrome Section, Masahiko Kawahara, Kyoto Shoin Co., Ltd., 1977, p. 76 / pl. 290-293.
Condition report (carefully viewed under UV, strong light and magnification): open firing crack to one side of the rim, and minor natural fritting to small areas around the rim and to the handles (kiln/firing flaws). The glaze on the lower point of the hexagonal rim directly beneath the interior painting of the rock beneath the deer looks like it has been slightly ground down, perhaps due to a piece of kiln grit that needed removal – the grinding looks to be very old and only occupies a very small area. The right-hand rope-twist handle has been detached and repaired.
