27. Kashibachi with boating figures design

Jingdezhen, China

Ming Dynasty, Tianqi Period (1620-1627)

Thickly potted, taking the form of a low coopered wooden basin, decorated to the interior with a scene of a river through which a small boat journeys with a seated noble figure in kimono and the boatman steering the craft beneath mountains and the moon, the figures and boat depicted in rare Japanese style, the exterior with solid blue horizontal lines over stylised wood grain, the centre of the base with an unglazed circle within the foot-rim.  5.5cm high, 20.75cm diameter.  Together with an old inscribed Japanese wooden box.  Cat. 679


For a kashibachi of the same form and exterior design but with a different interior design see Kosometsuke: Monochrome Section,Masahiko Kawahara, Kyoto Shoin Co., Ltd., 1977, p. 101 / pl. 382-383.

Note: Usually Chinese craftsmen would render the details of Japanese designs in their own style. Here is a rare example of figures depicted in a purely Japanese style including faces, clothing and stance.
