Jingdezhen, China

Ming Dynasty, Tianqi Period (1620-1627)

Of oval section with vertical walls, one side flattened to give a feeling of warping, powerfully and humorously decorated with eight buffalo engaged in various pursuits including drinking from a stream, resting, calling out and eating.  Old kintsugi repairs, and the mouth rim mounted with a metal collar.  8.75cm high, 11.75cm diameter.  Cat. 689

For an almost identical piece, see Trade Taste & Transformation: Jingdezhen Porcelain for Japan, 1620-1645, Julia B. Curtis, China Institute, 2006, p. 54 / pl. 23.

Condition report (carefully viewed under UV, strong light and magnification): kintsugi lacquer repairs to one area of the side wall where a triangular shaped area has detached, and to a chip to the rim. Fitted metal band to the rim possibly disguising further small chips or fritting.
