






































2. Choshi (sake serving vessel) with landscape design
Jingdezhen, China
Ming Dynasty, Tianqi Period (1620-1627)
The form derived from lacquer and metalware sake serving vessels, with a spout emerging from a bifurcation at one end of the overarching handle, finely decorated with a waterscape with human figures on island promontories and boats in the foreground, the background with mountains, and the handle with a line of Buddhist manji symbols. 17.5cm high, 20.5cm wide. Together with an early brown lacquer two-part lid for use as a mizusashi (cold water jar) and an early Japanese inscribed wooden box. Cat. 117
Condition report (carefully viewed under UV, strong light and magnification): one small frit to the rim of the mouth, and a small firing crack the the underside of the centre of the handle (production/firing flaws). One vertical hairline crack (unstained) to one side of the body near the rear of the handle, extending 3cm on the exterior and 5.2cm to the interior (professionally secured with conservation grade adhesive).
