Ming Dynasty, Tianqi Period (1620-1627)

Moulded in the form of a leaf, raised on three squat feet, the interior very finely decorated with a scene of Zhou Dunyi (1017-1073) sitting under a willow tree beside a lotus pond, the underside with the stem and veins of the leaf.  3.5cm high, 18.6cm wide.  Together with an old Japanese wooden box.  Cat. 690

Note: Zhou Dunyi was a foundational Song Dynasty philosopher whose synthesis of Daoist cosmology and Confucian ethics laid the groundwork for neo-Confucian thought, linking moral cultivation to the natural order.
